When you are thinking about learning to play the guitar and are looking for a good source for your first lessons, you should ignore all the people who insist that their program of guitar lesson DVDs are the only ones that are worth trying.

These people will try and persuade you that every other guitar lesson provider is simply trying to take advantage of you. Stick with the providers who are showing you how good their lessons are rather than these negative people who spend a lot of time rubbishing other peoples programs.

As with anything, there are good and not so good guitar lessons, so here are a few ideas to help you in your search for a good guitar lesson provider.

What to look for.

I know a couple of these suggestions are obvious but they are worth mentioning anyway.

  • When you are looking at a particular guitar course, make sure that there are videos available to watch.
  • The course provider should be an experienced teacher, they will probably tell you of their experience but, if they don’t be a little wary.
  • The provider should let you have a look at one or two sample lessons to give you an idea of the style and quality of the teaching. Not everyone will be able to be a great guitar player and not everyone will enjoy learning, so it is an advantage to get a sample lesson to see if this will be good for you.
  • You should go with someone who is accessible; it is important to be able to contact someone if you are having trouble understanding something. An online chat function is a great asset because you can get your questions answered almost immediately. The best guitar lesson providers will always offer excellent support.
  • If they offer tools and additional songs for you to practice this also points to good quality guitar lessons. One of the best tools that I have used is the CD or DVD with a great backing track so I could play along and get the feel of the lesson and timing right.
  • Every good guitar course provider will offer a money back guarantee. It is a standard practice when buying a digital product. You should be offered a 30 day money back guarantee as a minimum.
  • You should also expect a lot of music theory to be included in the lessons, even though you will probably be more interested in the actual playing of the guitar rather than the theory of what you are learning. But sometimes, if you understand why you are doing things, it could help to make you a better player. Not all people who want to play a guitar will want to know how to read music. But it is always good if the course provides you with the resources to help you to learn for when you are ready to move on to reading the music your self.
  • You should learn how to read Tablature (or Tab) as it will open up a whole new world on the internet to guitar pieces and songs that are freely available online. This is an easy way of reading music specially geared towards guitar.
  • There are advertisements online that tell you that you can ‘unlock the fret board’ in a single weekend. Well, in my opinion it will take a whole lot longer than one weekend to learn how to play the guitar. These products may be good and could even speed up the learning process but I can only hazard a guess at this because I have not personally tried the ‘learn to play over a weekend’ courses.  What I can tell you is this; a lot of people will take time to accustom themselves to the feel of the guitar and sometimes the strings can actually cause blisters until you are used to the pressure of the strings on your finger ends.

If you are serious about learning to play the guitar, my best advice to you is to buy the best quality guitar that you can afford at the beginning along with a program that comes highly recommended as a good one for beginners.

If you keep on practicing and learning, Eric Clapton had better watch out!
